Fortune 50 company saves $13M in health benefits and worker’s compensation claims costs in one year

The Situation: The news first came down from human resources, but the legal department provided the hard numbers. Stress was a significant and growing problem for this self-insured Fortune 50 company. Health benefits costs and stress-related worker’s compensation claims were cutting into profits. Worker’s compensation claims alone had risen 80% in three years, and projections showed that stress claims could bankrupt the company if the problem wasn’t addressed systematically.

Not only did this company insure more than 100,000 employees, they insured their families as well. A look at utilization rates showed that 20% of employees were responsible for 80% of health benefits utilization and 90% of the stress-related worker’s compensation claims. Roughly 22,000 of their 110,000 employees were identified as high utilizers.

The Organization Stress Profile: The Stress Navigator Workshop was made available to high utilizers in either online or paper-and-pencil group presentation formats. Employees received personal stress reports, while the company received the group data identifying company-wide trends and sources of stress amongst their high utilizers.

Organizational stress data analysis showed that 85% of parents found disciplining their children to be a highly stressful issue. This was significant in that a major health benefit cost was adolescent in-patient psychiatric treatment. The company implemented parenting workshops, which employees’ attended on their own time, and began monitoring the psychiatric facilities most used by employee families for abuses.

Resolution: The result was a measurable drop in adolescent hospitalizations, which had accounted for a significant portion of their psychiatric benefits. Thanks in large part to the targeted stress reduction programs initiated as a result of Stress Navigator results, this company was able to cut $13 million in health benefits and stress-related worker’s compensation claims costs in one year.
